Soding or Seeding

Question
Thank you for your help. My yard gets partial direct sun and partial shade. Where would I get this organic composite? Do I remove and how do I remove the sod? If I seed when do I start seeding after puting this organic matter?

Answer
What you want to do NEXT SPRING is to OVERSEED.

Rent a machine called a 'Slit Seeder' locally.  This makes your work much easier.  Slit Seeders slice into the Soil AND plant Grass Seed AT THE SAME TIME.  Anything that makes this work convenient is a great idea in my book.

This is preferable to pulling up the Sod.  Most important of all, it makes sure your Grass Seed will have GREAT Soil-to-Seed contact when you plant it.  When you're done, run around the Seeded areas with mulch and sprinkle it lightly over the Seeds.

Then water gently, and keep moist.

But that's next Spring.  For now, you are going to have to take steps to raise the amount of Organic Matter in your Soil.  Use a drop spreader or hand drop bags of Compost or Humus on top of the failed Sod, in a thin film.

Don't forget to water.
