Resodding a St. Augustine Lawn

Question
I have large patches (+100 sq.ft) of my St. Augustine lawn that has been invaded by weeds and carpet grass. I would like to resod those patches but am not sure the steps to take. Should I kill off everything with a Weed-B-Gone type product, then till everything, then lay the sod??? Again, not really sure what steps to take. Please advise.
Thanks, Matt from Tampa, FL

Answer
You can use a mower or string trimmer to scalp the areas and sod directly. The sod has to be jammed in tightly and must cover the bare spots right into the existing good grass. The objective is to smother any regrowth from below. If you are not sure that you can do this effectively, then treat the problem spots with a non selective weedkiller like glyphosate (the a.i. in "RoundUp"), allow a 7 to 10 days for uptake, scalp and resod.
