Question
I do not no what kind of grass I have and I have some bare patches.  Is it best to let my lawn go to seed, then when i cut it will it grow properly?

NOOOOOOO!

There are not THAT many Grasses you can have.  Tell me where you live -- the County and the State.  Then tell me how much sun you have -- is it a lot of sun, or a lot of shade or somewhere in between?
