hair like worm waving above the lawn

Question
Help!  I was sitting in my chair in my back yard and about 6 feet away I saw something white and hair like waving about an inch above the grass.  It is about 2 inches long fully extended.  What is it?  Mostly, I want to be sure that a) my kids can walk around in bare feet and not get "infected" and b) that this isn't a parasite from my dog or cat..
Ohhh I hope you know what this is, I've got the weebie jeebies now...

Also, I read another topic on here regarding fertilizer.  Is all fertilizer a chemical?  I was told to always fertilize my garden and lawn, I don't use chemicals at all!

Answer
The white, hairlike thing? I have no clue. Sorry. That's a bit out of my area of expertise, but it does not sound like anything I've ever heard of.

Fertilizer is generally not considered a chemical. It is basically food for your plants and grass, which they need. There are many 100% natural fertilizers that work wonderfully.

Many fertilizers are mixed with chemicals though in order to help you kill two birds with one stone. For example "Weed & Feed" is a type of fertilizer that is plant food mixed with weed killer. Just make sure you ask the garden center guy (or gal) which fertilizer is completely natural.

Thanks for writing Christina!
