base for stones

Question
Over the course of several years and animals, I have an area just off my deck that will not grow grass. It is about 4' x 8' and I am considering putting stepping stones to totally cover that area. Somebody told me that if I use sand, it will draw ants. Is this the case? If so, what should I use as a base for the stones? Any help you can offer me would be greatly appreciated. Linda

Answer
No it won't draw ants. Ants don't like sand more than any other soil. Ants move to find moisture mostly or protection from weather. They may move to the patio but it will be to nest protected under the patio stones, not for the sand. And yes, you do use sand as a setting bed. See my other previous answers about laying patios to learn how.

Best of luck
