Planting under Deck

Question
We have two large decks: one off the second floor dining room, with a stairway to a second deck surrounding an above-ground pool. The supports to the upper deck and stairwell a very unattractive and we would like to disguise/dress up the walkway that goes under the upper deck.  I have a few hostas there now, but under the stairway we were thinking of vines or a shrub. This would be in mostly shade, but would get some morning sun.  What might grow well there?
