landscaping under a tree

Question
Under our large spruce tree in the lawn we would like to create a circle of bricks, add dirt, and plant with shade indigenous plants. We have read that 4" is the max for the added soil, but currently there is lawn. Should we get rid of the grass first?

Answer
Yes, you should get rid of all grass first, and I would add a little more soil due to settling.  Be careful of what you plant under trees, some of the plants that are meant for shade do not do well in a shady condition under trees.  A good plant to use is epimedium 'versicolor' or liriope 'spicata'
