Sweet Gum Tree

Question
I have been told that there is a type of hormone treatment that can be used on the sweet gum tree so that it doesn't produce all the 'button balls'. Do you know anything about that? Is it something I could do myself?

Answer
I don't know of any such hormone for the Sweet Gum, but there are several used in the horticultural industry for seed production of other plants (usually agricultural crops)...There is even one for reducing olive fruit production.  It is a real mess to have olives over concrete, if you thought a buch of prickly balls was bad!

Either you love these tree seed pods, or curse them.  These beautiful trees come at a price.  Sorry; I guess the kids and squirrels will be happy.
