replanting trees

Question
Hi,
My friend wanted her trees and bushed removed so we dug them up and tried to replant them in our yard last summer. They still do not have green on them almost a year later.  They look like a tree or bush in the winter. I live in Texas and everytign else has bloomed already, we have had lots of rain and lots of sun. They are not easily breakable like a dead tree or bush. How long does this process take to show green or how can I tell if they are going to take or are they dead? We used hormone grow on them last year. The really large tree we do not knwo what it is but we thing the others are red tip.

Thanks Kim

Answer
Kim,
If you live in Texas and you don't see green yet, they are probably dead. Sorry to say that but you are correct in wondering why they have not green up.Even if they aren't brittle it just means they haven't had time to become brittle and some plants don't get brittle even though they are dead.It is very difficult to transplant really large plants, even though I have done it with surprising success. It is extremely important to keep the root system intact and water deeply. I know you feel it's a lot of work for nothing but that is life and when you are dealing with large plants it is 50/50 chance of survival.
It is best to plant smaller plants because the root system is not as large and they don't have to put out that much energy. Good luck on everything!
