Orange Trees

Question
QUESTION: Do all orange trees in Florida have Lemon Rootstock?

ANSWER: Hi Roger.  No all orange trees do not anymore.  That was an old root stock.  There are all new rules for citrus growing now.  Bud wood has to come from one place that all growers get there stock from.  Then it has to be inspected and re-inspected, grown an enclosed greenhouse where you can not enter unless sprayed and inspected again and then, I would guess monthly.  kathy

QUESTION: But some sort of rootstock is used.  They are not grown from seeds.

Answer
Hi Roger, correct, a root stock is used, but they are different stock from the ones they used to use.  At one time they used sour orange root stock.  From a seed a tree would grow enormous and have thorns and take years to fruit. On a root stock they fruit sooner.  Different types of citrus are put on different types of rootstock.  At one time they used sour orange and sour lemon.  kathy
