moving trees

Question
I have just fenced my backyard and the previous owner put 2 big spruces and several bushes--i don't know what they are--right on the property line...so they sit right next to the fence...is it a good idea to keep them there and do you advocate moving trees and bushes?

Answer
Moving plants is o.k.  I've  moved trees over 25 feet tall, but the bigger they are, the less likely they are to survive, unless you have specialized equipment (like a backhoe or tree-spade).  And, a tree with a modest-size dirtball is just stinkin' heavy!

The best time of year to move plants is the spring or fall.  The summer heat really decreases the survival rate.

Depending on the size (and your perception of it's worth), you may consider hiring it out to a lanscape contractor.

Also, get the new hole ready before you start digging up the plant...

Good luck!!  -Marc
