magnolia trees

Question
I have two magnolia trees in my yard, they seems to be stressed, I have leaves covering the lawn every day, they are yellowed, some very dark and spotted.  They very seldom blosson, they just drop on the ground.  I live in galveston texas, hot and humid.  Can I do anything to correct the problem? thanks

Answer
Magnolias are semi-evergreen and they are probably dropping their fall leaves at this time in preparation for putting on new growth.  I would fertilize the trees with a fertilizer high in phosphorus.  Example of a blend is 5-10-5.  The phosphorus will help the tree set blooms.  Make sure they do not become drought stressed as this will cause defoliation and poor bloom set as well.  Try these things and see if there is improvement.  Good Luck.
