Late Sept. blooms....

Question
Hi Marc,   I m writing to see if you might be able to suggest some plants that will still be doing well in LATE Sept.  My future hubby and I are planning to have our wedding reception here and home and have recently put in three raised planting beds.  I m very new to gardening and have no idea what will still be blooming.  I love daisies, Calla Lillies, Carnations... things of that nature.  I m not a full time gardener by any means... so if at all possible I d like to find things that tend toward low maintainance.  We d like to find things that will attract butterflies, ladybugs and hummingbirds.  I m not sure what type of information will be helpful to you... so I ll just give you what I know so far.      The raised beds are nearly full sun. We live in zone(s) 7-8 (northern Calif).  We can install drip systems if recommended.  We have a fully inclosed yard.... so deer shouldnt be a problem (or havent been in the past).  Please let me know if you need any other information.  Thank you so much for your time.  Take care.

Answer
Hello Becky -

I just recently picked up an interesting guide from Home Depot, called "Annual, Perennial, and Groundcover Guide" for $2...and it lists blooming seasons as well as colors and good notes on what is easy to grow or attracts butterflies (like Ageratum or Buddleia).

I could suggest all sorts of plants, but you have the opportunity to match the garden colors with your wedding plans.  Big swaths of pink or yellow(or whatever colors you chose) could give accent to the wedding party, marvelously.  Plus, my particular selections may not be available in your area.

I've always had a dream of an all-purple (my favorite color) front yard, but I'll have to wait for the kids to move out or get older - they love those multi-colored pony packs that populate the front of most stores in the spring!

So, again, I'd suggest you spend a few bucks and get this or any other guide, and plan from there.

Good gardening, and the very best for a happy & blessed marriage.

Marc
