Transplanting Ivy

Question
I want to transplant some of my friends Ivy to my property.  I have 4 questions on the subject:

1.  When is the best time of year to transplant?

2.  Are there any "tricks" to being succesful in transplanting?

3.  What is the actual procedure of transplanting the Ivy?

4.  Can Ivy grow in direct sunlight?

Thanks so much.

Ryan

Answer
Hi Ryan,

1. The best time to propagate ivy is during the summer and early fall.
2. In some cases with bushy growing varieties, short heeled cuttings 75-100 mm. long can be taken. Other varieties have long slender stems and little if any lateral growth. In this case the long stems can be cut into short lengths with two or tree nodes, or, if the maximum number of cuttings is required, single node cuttings can be taken.
3. The cuttings strike without any difficulty but quicker and more evenly in a good propagation set up. Where room in the propagating bed is available, it is better  to insert the cuttings singly in small tubes, specially the fairly large cuttings taken with heels. They then make very nice little plants for potting.
The best soil mix would be one part of a good organic compost, one part of peat moss and one part of coarse river sand.
4. Ivy can grow almost anywhere including under direct sunlight.
Aren't they great?

Good Luck.

Carlo
