Irrigation expansion

I have a need to add to my existing shrub irrigation zone.  In the past, I have purchased what looked like a "tee" fitting that was cut horizontally in half.  You coated the bottom of the "so called tee" with pvc cement and then snapped the fitting on to the shrub water line.  Using a drill, you then drilled through the upper part of the "tee" fitting into the water line. Then, you would add a riser and sprinkler head attachment.  Home Depot no longer carries these fittings.  Would you know where I might obtain them?

george, i guess the line you are tapping into is pvc and not poly. i am sure hopme depot still sells pvc fittings. so you may have some kind of odd stuff. try your local spears dealer or irrigation supply. you may want to think about buy a saddle to add on. a brasss one is best. a saddle would simply clamp over the pipe and you then tighten it down and then drill a hole through the saddle into the top of the pipe. no mess, no glue and you dont have to wait for it to set up to turn the water on. in fact you can put a saddle on under water. you just need to get the right size.

Hi James,

Do the saddles come in 3/4"?  Is it ok to bury it beneath the soil?  After drilling through the top of the saddle into the water line beneath, can I attach a riser with a sprinkler head to it?  Does Home Depot carry these saddles?

George

Answer
george the answer is yes to both questions. they will come in all the standard pipe sizes, 1/2", 3/4", 1" 1 1/4", etc.... they are made to be buried in the ground. if you are attaching a 1/2" riser then you ned to ask for a 3/4" x 1/2" threaded saddle.(1/2" is the size of the threaded tap) however i do not believe you will find them at home depot. you may have to go to your local phone book under irrigation suppliers or plumbing suppliers.
