irrigation pump pressure

Question
QUESTION: I installed a 3/4 hp Flotec pump about two years ago to an eight zone sprinkler system
1.) first year all was fine, with well over 50 lbs of pressure (pump turns off at approx 55 lbs.)
2.) Now with all valves closed I get only approx 42 lbs of pressure and when I open any zone (or a hose) the pressure drops to about 20 lbs of pressure.
3>) When I connect a hose from my home line- I get over 55 lbs (turns off) with the valves closed and approx 40 lbs with a zone (or hose) open.

What can I do to remedy the system. The sprinkler system is for all practical purposes not usable with the low pressure.??  Thanks Franz

ANSWER: Hey Franz, it sound as if the pump either needs to be rebuilt or replaced. Let me know it you have anymore questions, thanks and have a great day.

QUESTION: any diagnostics I could do ?? to make sure it is the pump and not a lack of water underground??  Franz

Answer
Hey Franz, if you are not sure about the water getting to the inlet side, an easy test would be to put the inlet pipe into a big vessel of water, and then turn the pump on and see what your pressure is. This way you know that there is plenty of water getting to the pump. I didn't realize there could be a problem with the well. If you are still not getting the right pressure with the inlet pipe sucking from the water reservoir, then its the pump. If you get a good reading with the pipe sucking from the reservoir, then check the well. Thanks and have a great day.
