irrigation system

Question
We just bought a house with an underground irrigation system. We would like to put up a fence and plant some trees but we don't know know where the system runs underground. Is there anyway of mapping it out so that when we dig we don't hit anything?

Answer
Hey Amy, there is really no way of knowing exactly how things were installed, unless whoever put it in, drew up what is called an "as built drawing". Basically this would show where the lines were run, heads installed, etc. More than likely this was not done. What I would suggest, is to dig up a head near where you want to plant or dig a hole. At the bottom of the head you should see the pipe, and determine what direction it is running. Also, when you are digging the hole(s) just be careful for the first 12" or so, normally the pipes will not be any deeper than this.Good luck and have a great day.
