One Zone Dead, One Zone Too Alive

Question
Hi Jim,

I have a 6 zone Toro system.

Zone 3 will run from the second the pump comes on until the second the pump turns off.  As the system moves from zone to zone, zone 3 will keep running.  The only way I can turn it off while the system is running is to manually tighten the wagon wheel on the valve to close it.  Then zone 3 will shut down.  It also shuts off when the pump kicks off.

Additionally, zone 6 just won't come on.  It worked once or twice after it was de-winterized but now nothing.

I have a voltage meter, so I can run a few tests but have not done so.  The wire connections in the valve box (in the ground) are all connected and in good shape.  Not wet or corroded.

Thank you,
Kate

Answer
Hey Kate, normally if the valve is not working properly it will either be the solenoid or the diaphragm. First check the solenoids by taking them off the top of the valve (turn off the water to them first) then turn that particular valve on by the controller, and see if the plunger inside the solenoid is pulled up inside the solenoid If it doesn't, then you need to replace the solenoid. If the solenoids are good, then I would suggest replacing the diaphragm in both the valves (#3 and #6). Go to www.irrigationtutorials.com and this website will show you how to rebuild a valve. Good luck and have a great day.
