plants that grow in the dark.

Question
Dear Sir,

I am in search of a plant, preferably a beautiful, exotic one that must grow (or is capable of growing) in the dark ?if such a plant exists (recognizing the importance of photosynthesis.)

My question, I should explain, is for a literary purpose. I'm currently working on a story and such a plant would suit the plot perfectly.

Answer
plants photosynthesizing w/out light-not that i've ever heard of. i've often wondered about plants in iceland where they get 3 months of darkness?
about 20 years ago a submersable submarine(ALVIN) off western south america discovered life-like tubes(worms) living by hydrothermal vents deep in the ocean floor. at their depth no light is present. even though they are not plants(no photosynthesis takes place) they are living organisms. they symbiotically use bacteria as an energy source. plant, animal, or what? it may fit your bill w/much stretching of the imagination.
it pays to watch the discovery channel.
look up riftra pachyptila - name of worm-like creature. try alvin submersible submarine also.
good luck. let me know what you think about this.
rick
