Question -
I live in southwestern virginia and there is a weed eating my gardens and lawn.  It has a reddish tubular stem and has green glossy leaves on the stems that are smooth and kind of oval in shape.  It is low to the ground does not get more than one inch tall usually.  Each weed has a cross hatch of the tubes at the base where it meets the ground.  Any information would be appreciated.  Thanks, Amber

Answer -
Hello Amber,

Trying to narrow down your weed. Is it succulant in habit -leaves are "rubbery"? Is there any veins in the leaves?

Please respond,
Angie

Answer
Sounds like Purslane too me. You might want to type that into a search engine and see a picture to be for sure. Don't be confused with the annual flower purslane or portulaca.
I won't sugar coat it for you...this is a very difficult weed to control. It likes dry locations and particularly takes off this time of year. Because of those glossy leaves, herbicides have a hard time being absorbed before they dry or run off. Luckly it pulls very easily and that is how I remove it from beds. Unfortunatly, the slightest leaf or stem piece left behind will root a new plant.
I do spray it with Round-up in large open areas of my beds (in the morning, for maximum absorption) with fairly good success. After the majority of it has been removed then put down a pre-emergent herbidice containing oryzalin or pendimethalin to prevent the seeds from germinating in the future. The seeds will survive for many years so stay on top of this and realize that returning plants may be from not removing all of the roots from previous plants.
In your lawn it is a little easier to control, a basic broad leaf weed killer should do the trick. Just follow the directions on the bag or bottle. The best way to prevent weeds in your lawn is by keeping it healthy and the turf is pretty capable of choking the weeds out.
I hope this helps, please write back if you need any clarification. Good Luck!
