Unusual Fruit?

Question
When traveling from Nashville to Columbia SC, we stopped by a dam and spotted a tree that had a very odd looking fruit?.

It was lime green, very bumpy all over (like covered in beads all over), shape of a large orange, had a little sticky residue to it.  Did not smell bad.

There were many on the trees and I got one on the ground and brought home.  I have a picture of it if you would like me to send.

Answer
I'm pretty sure what you saw was a Maclura pomifera, or Osage orange (not really an orange).  You can upload a picture if you want to be sure.  See the link below to see a picture of it.
