IDENTIFYING BRIAR PLANT

Question
WE HAVE A GREEN STEMMED PLANT WITH RAZOR SHARP BRIARS THAT GROWS THICK ALONG A CREEK ON OUR PROPERTY IN NC ARKANSAS.  THERE ARE NO LEAVES ON IT AT THIS TIME. THE THORNS ARE SITUATED ABOUT EVERY INCH OR SO AND IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO GRAB IT.  WOE TO ANY PERSON ENTRAPPED IN IT. I AM TRYING TO CONTROL IT WITH A MACHETE AND SHRUB SHEARS.  I AM SORRY BUT I HAVE NO PICS AT THIS TIME.

Answer
My only guess is a trifoliate orange, a non-edible, cold hardy orange used as a root-stock for other oranges in some areas.  See the image search below to see if I am right.
