Black-eyed Susans; Holes in Blooms

Question
Once my flowers bloon the petals are full of tiny holes like something is eating them - do you know why and what Ican do to prevent it?
Thank you. Marilyn

Answer
Marilyn, it could be one of many pests. The most common culprits are flea beetles, aphids, and slugs.

Flying insects such as beetles and aphids can be controlled with insectidal sprays. The most effective controls include pyrethrum and/or rotenone. These are organic controls which are safe for humans and the environment.

If slugs are the issue, you should see them in the early evening. They usually hide under garden debris or mulch. They can be controlled with products like Sluggo or Escargo.

All of these products can be purchased through Gardens Alive or Planet Natural. Both sites are listed below. Just type slugs or pests in their search fields.

I hope this information helps. Good luck, and please write again if I can ever provide assistance.

Mike
