Blooms on African Violets

Question
My violetes are beautifully lush and green but are not producing flowers.  I water and fertilize them weekly and keep them under 12 hours per day of flourescent light.  Help!

Answer
Ok usually when a mature African Violet will not bloom it is a light issue.  Some varieties require up to 14 hours of light.  Try increasing the light about 30 minutes a week until you get to 14 hours.  This way you do not burn them or put them into shock.

Next what kind of fertlizer are you using?  If it is well balanced you should be fine.  Also use only 1/3 of what the directions say if you are fertlizing every time you water.  You can see some adverse effect of this over a long period of time.  If your fertlizer is higher in nitrogen than all the others that could very well be the problem too.

Try these things and if it still does not work in a month to 6 weeks contact me again.  We will figure this out.

Happy growing
Kristina
