weak jalapeno peppers

Question
Hi Mike!
I live in LaGrange, Indiana. I have 3 jalapeno pepper plants in my home garden. The plants are healthy and are producing peppers like crazy, but they are very weak. Is there anything I can do to get hotter peppers?
Thank You!

Answer
Shawn, when jalapeno or habanera peppers are not hot, it is usually due to the soil being too alkaline, which means the ph is above 7.  To lower the ph, simply add ground rock sulfur. This should help neutralize the ph or even bring it below 7 to the point where it is slightly acidic. This will promote more heat in the peppers.

Most plants prefer a neutral ph of 7. If the soil is ever too acidic, add ground lime to the soil to help sweeten it and raise the ph level. You can purchase ph testers at most garden centers. They are very easy to use, and relatively inexpensive.

Finally, I would supplement the feedings by using a fertilizer high in phosphorus, or amend your soil this fall with organic matter such as peat, aged manure, and compost. This will also help neutralize your ph level.

I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
