growing peppers

Question
I want to try growing bell peppers, tomatoes, in container pots-no transplanting to a larger garden.  Can I grow bell peppers from the seeds inside a store bought pepper?  If so, how do I do this?

Answer
La Donna:

You could use the seeds from a purchased pepper, but you may not get what you expect. Chances are the peppers sold in grocery stores are hybrids, which means they are bred from two different varieties to show particular characteristics. They will not come true from seed, that is what you see is not necessarily what you will get. Which is not to say that you won't like what you get, either. But if you buy packaged seeds, at least you will know what you can expect in terms of color, size, taste, hardiness, etc.
