Butternut

Question
Do I need to spray my butternut fruit to stop it getting stung or eaten by bugs? Can I make something myself to spray or do I have to buy something? I live in Durban, South Africa

Answer
If insects are a problem, then by all means you need to spray the plants with an insecticide or horicultural oil.

You can make your own spray by combining 3 tbs. of dishwashing soap and one tsp. of vegetable oil per gallon of water. Spray the plants liberally until you see runoff. Repeat every three days until the infestation is eliminated. If you do use a commercial insecticide, spray only as directed as too much can burn the plants. I personally use pyrethrum, an organic insecticide. But you will find others at your local garden center.

Good luck, and please write again if I can ever provide assistance.

Regards,

Mike
