Radish problems

Question
My radishes have lots of top growth but the actual root is straight, not bulby. What am i doing worng?

Answer
Lisa, when the roots do not develop, it is due to a lack of potassium in the soil. There are three basic nutrients required for good growth. Nitrogen promotes lush foliage; phosphorus stimulates blooming; and potassium develops the roots. You need to apply a fertilizer high in potassium.

Your local garden center sells fertilizers specifically for root crops. My advice is to apply it once every 10 days. You also want to water deeply when needed. Shallow watering results in the roots reaching for the soil or developing poorly. You also should mulch the soil with shredded leaves or compost to help retain moisture and cool the soil.

I hope this information helps. Please write again if I can ever provide assistance.

Regards,

Mike
