Question
What organic fertilizers do you recommend for lawns?

Followup To

Question -
I have heard a lot of good information about using coffee grounds for fertilizing plants, trees and shrubs.  What would be the most skillful way to use coffee grounds for the lawn?
What quantities would one use?

Answer -
Coffee grounds are rather weak as organic fertilizers and would require about 1 cubic yard per 1000 sq. ft spread evenly. This is about 1/3" layered over the lawn.

A better use is to compost it with garden scraps and shredded leaves, and then use it as soil amendments for flower beds.

Answer
You can buy pelleted manures such as Espoma Organic Lawn fertilizer (mainly cow manure), Ringer Lawn Restorer (Chicken manure) or you can apply your own composted horse manure. Also try blood meal (use lightly), bone meal, and corn gluten meal (but not when you also want to sow seeds as the CGM contain properties which kills seeds. Can be used as a natural organic herbicide, however).

Finally you can try Milorganite (product made from waste sewage plants).
