Eucalyptus

Question
I just purchased Eucalyptus cinerea at a local garden center.  I planted in a 10" hanging planter outside with some other annuals(allysum, and petunias).  I live in Northern New Jersey.  When should I bring it inside? Can it be replanted inside? Also does the Eucalyptus need support(should it grow straight up?).  Right now it is growing sideways and it is about 18".

Answer
This is a small tree that grows to from 20 to 50 feet tall and nearly as wide. It has an irregular habit. It should be prunes back frequently to keep it's form. Use the cuttings for decorative foliage.
It is hardy to 14 degrees to 17 degrees. I would not let it get that cold, bring it into a bright unheated area when it gets around 30 degrees until it gets too big, then plant it outside. It will recover from freezes if the base of the trunk is heavily mulched. So when you plant it in the ground, give it lots of protection.

This is not a plant I would recommend growing in New Jersey.
