Herbs for Kids

Many people prefer the use of herbs to drugs due to the lower risk of side effects. This is the reason why herbal remedies are used for kids as well. The following article provides information about some of these herbal medicines.

Dosage

For Infants up to 2 Years - The recommended dosage for this age group is two to three drops of tincture mixed in one-fourth cup of water or three teaspoons of tea.

Two to six Years of Age - The dosage prescribed for this particular age group is six to ten drops of tincture mixed in one-fourth cup of water or tea in the same proportion.

Six to Twelve years of Age - One tablet, capsule, or ten to twelve drops of tincture mixed in the same amount of water.

Twelve Years to Adults - The recommended dose for this age group is two tablets or capsules with a cup of tea, and twenty to thirty drops of tincture added to water.

Herbal Medicines for Kids
  • In order to boost the immune system, parents can resort to a herb called echinacea. This herb helps in building a stronger and sturdier immune system. It also prevents colds and coughs. If cold does attack your child's immune system, administering this herb in any form, be it a tablet or syrup, can be beneficial. It could be given five times a day for a week.
  • The use of echinacea herb could prove beneficial for sore throat, fevers, and headaches.
  • To cure ear infections in children, orange grape is the best remedy.
  • A herbal remedy called astragalus fights viruses; however, it is advised that the administration of this herb be stopped, if the child is suffering from fever as this may prolong the duration of fever.
  • Ginger tea helps fight nausea and severe bouts of vomiting. Even though, the health benefits of ginger roots are plenty, children might not be ready to consume it due to its strong taste. It would thus be a good idea to mix the ginger tea with apple or orange juice and serve it to your kids.
  • Flaxseed tea is a natural remedy for constipation.
  • Diarrhea can also be cured by administering a herbal remedy consisting of slippery elm.
  • ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), which is characterized by hyperactivity and short attention span, is a common condition that affects children. Herbal remedies for ADHD constitute calming herbs that soothe their nerves. Calming herbs for kids include lime blossom, catnip, and chamomile. Chamomile works as a herbal soporific. These herbs, also prevent the child from getting restless and cranky most of the time.
