Seed Starting Indoors - Seeds That You Can Start Right Now

Are the cold, dark, gloomy days of winter starting to get to you? Are you feeling depressed because of the lack of green trees and flowers? Are all of the seed advertisings of mouth watering vegetables straight from your garden making you ready for warm weather? I know it is just the beginning of february but there are actually seeds that you can go ahead and start now to get you into the springtime mood. It could be just what you need to get you through the rest of the winter.

There are a handful of vegetable that you plant in your garden early that you can go ahead and start your seeds for. Many people don't think about starting your seeds this early but with right set up seedlings can remain indoors for a good deal of time. Some of the vegetables that can be planted indoors now include spinach, chard, cabbage, lettuce, herbs, tomatoes, brussel sprouts, and broccoli. These are considered early season crops so they can be planted earlier during cooler weather. If you start these seeds now you can keep them indoors for six weeks to two months before transplanting into your garden.

Towards the end of february and the first part of march you will be able to begin to start your seeds for some of the plants that you would plant a little later. These crops require the soil to be warmer for them to thrive and really start to grow. Some of these plants include cucumbers, squash, melons, and zucchini. These are good general times of when you can start your seeds but it is always best to look at a growing chart for your location to determine the exact times of when to transplant into the garden. You can generally start your seeds up to two months before the date of transplanting into garden.

So if the weather has dampened your spirits grab a seed catalog and get a list of the seeds you would like to plant. I'm sure you have probably gotten a few catalogs in your mailbox already. For the last month of winter you can get a head start on spring by having your plants established and healthy when its time for them to go in the garden. You will be surprised at how quick spring gets here if you are doing something that you are passionate and excited about in the meantime.
