Re: Cymbidium Orchid flowers on a plant

Question
I purchased a healthy cymbidium orchid plant from Trader Joe's about a month ago, and I am know noticing that some of the flowers are turning black on the edges and show signs of wilting.
Is the plant getting too much sunlight or heat? What is the length of time that the flowers stay in bloom?

Answer
Peter, you are right in suggesting that the plant is approaching the end of its bloom period.  One risk we all take in buying blooming plants is that we don't know how long it has been in flower.  I like to purchase plants that have as many (or more) buds than flowers. Individual cymbidium flowers last from 2-4 weeks depending upon plant condition, genetic background, condition of the potting mix, and exposure of the plant during delivery to the vendor.
