Question
I got an Orchid for mother's day my favorite flower.  Its in a coffee mug.  It had 5 flowers on it and now I am down to 3, it has moss on top of the soil.  I water it every 7 days but the flowers keep dropping.  Please help

Answer
Christie, thank you for the question.  I will assume that you have a phalaenopsis orchid as they are the most common.  If it is some other type of orchid, my advice may be somewhat different.  You can send a picture if you wish so I can verify the type.

First, most orchids can be damaged by being constantly wet at the roots as it causes root rot.  They need to be in a pot with lots of drainage holes in the bottom to promote rapid dainage.  Watering it once per week is fine.

I'm not so concerned about loss of flowers because most individual orchid flowers last about 3 weeks. As soon as the flowers have all fallen you need to repot this plant in a plastic pot with lots of drainage holes.  Repot using fresh orchid potting mix which can be purchased at a garden center.  Most Lowes and Home Depot Garden Centers have orchid potting mix.  When you unpot your plant, preparatory to repotting it, rinse off the roots and remove any roots that are "mushy".  Healthy orchid roots are firm and turn green when wet.

The old flower spike, if it remains green, should be cut off just above a node (ie joint).  If it remains green, it may send off a branch at the node which might also develop buds and bloom.

Best place to grow a phalaenopsis orchid is on the windowsill of an east facing window so it gets morning sun.  If you grow it well, it should bloom for you next Mother's Day.
