philodendron house plant

Question
I was given a philodendron plant that is about 34 inches tall when I first got it the leave's were great big and green know that I've had it for a couple of weeks the leave's are starting to turn yellow around the base of the plant I have watered it twice since I have had it but I'm not sure if it needs lot of sunlight or indirect light. Please help I don't want to loose it.

Answer
Hi Sarah,
Philodendrons are low light plants but they can grow well under medium light conditions. A philodendron should never get direct sunlight and should be kept out of indirect sunlight.
The yellowing of leaves around the base could be caused by normal aging or the plant adapting to it's new environment.
Philodendrons like soil that is somewhat dry, especially during the dormant period. When a philodendron is dormant and has little or no new growth then you should allow the soil to become quite dry, although not totally dry and then water sparingly. During growing periods allow the top 1/3 of the soil to become dry then water enough for just a small amount of water to drain out of the drainage holes on the bottom of the pot. Philodendrons hate to be kept in wet soil so use a potting mix that has good drainage. You can add extra perlite to whatever commercial potting soil you are currently using to improve drainage and increase airflow into the soil.
I hope this helps. If you have any questions or need additional information please don't hesitate to ask.
Thanks
Tracy
