clivia miniata house plant

Question
QUESTION: The leaves have started becoming yellow from the base and now there are three more yellow leaves.  AM I watering my plant to much or not enough? Thanks for your help.  My plant has already bloomed this year. Do they every bloom more than one a year?

ANSWER: Georgia,

They only bloom once a year. Yellow leaves can indicate either too much or too little water, usually too much.  How often are you watering it? Have you recently repotted it? When did yours bloom? Is yours indoors or outdoors? How much light is yours getting? How old is it? Let me now and I will try to help you save it. They are too expensive to let die.

QUESTION: Thank you for your help!!!  I usually had been watering the plant weekly, but I got off schedule due to distractions having a new puppy.  I may have over watered it.  I did repot it and took out 2 new shoots. (It's indoors and get the evening sun.)  It bloomed after this.  It now is getting yellow up the base of the plant. I only watered it a little on Sat. last week. I've had it four years and it has bloomed each year.Appreciate any advice. Georgia

Answer
Georgia,

If you repotted it in standard potting soil that may be part of the problem. It needs very porous soil like bonsai soil or chicken grit mixed with potting soil. Regular potting soil alone holds too much water.  It prefers morning light, evening light may be burning it. It would really like to be outdoors under a shade tree where it will get morning light. The following website has very good info on clivia plants: http://www.shieldsgardens.com/info/CliviaCare.html

Good luck.
