Yellow mold like in house plant soil

Question
I have this yellow hard , shape of a long grain rice but bigger then rice, smaller then peanut things grow in the soil of my English ivy.  I have never seem anything like it.  Right next to the ivy, I have a Jade plant that is always have mold in the top of the soil.  But the plant itself it's fine.  I usually wait until the soil is dry then water it.  I don't know if the ivy is effected by the jade plant.  But the jade plant is very health, eventhough the soil keep on have mold and always comes back.  The ivy looks a little sad.  Not that bad yet.  I move the yellow hard weird thing out of the soil.  And put the plant by the window.  In two days, I saw new yellow thing growing again in the soil.  Should I just re-pot the plant?  Thank you.  And what is that yellow thing anyway?

Answer
That would be mushrooms.  I used to get them all the time before I started mixing my own soil.  If you do not want to repot just keep taking them out with a spoon or something similar until they are gone.  Mushrooms spread so rapidly that they are hard to get rid of.

If you are repotting I suggest that you sterlize the soil before using it.

You can do this by boiling water and pouring it over the soil.  This should kill any spores, bugs or anyother nasty things hiding in your soil.

Happy Growing
Kristina
