dying house plants

Question
My one house plant is dying. It has a layer of light yellow almost fuzzy looking eggs or fungus on top of the soil.  The leaves are slowly dying, and the plant is droopy.  My mother says it is spider mites.  Help!!

Answer
Hi Laura,

It is hard to give you a definitive answer without knowing what kind of plant you have, its size, the light it receives, and your watering routine.

Based on what little you have told me, it s probably mold on the soil surface and that suggests that you are keeping the soil too wet. Scrape of the top layer of soil and mold and allow the soil to dry out deeper into the pot before watering.

If you can email a photo of the plant, including its pot, to me at [email protected], I could ID the plant for you and give a better diagnosis.

Regards,
Will Creed
