deformed Sarracenia leaves.

Question

Deformed Sarracenia le
Hi I just have a question about my Sarracenia.Over the last couple of days I have noticed that developing leaves are deformed in the shape of a backwards arch on my Sarracenia Flava and Dana's Delight. Is the something wrong with how I'm growing it?I live in Anaheim,CA and I give it around 9 hours of direct sunlight a day.I water it almost everyday and I don't see any sign of pests. Please tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Thank You.

Answer
Hi Eric,

Because I don't see any evidence of pest or disease, your watering is my red flag.  You say you water it almost every day.  Is the plants pot actually sitting in water?  If not, it should be.  Sarracenia should have their soil constantly wet.  If it has experienced any dry periods this would cause the mishapen leaves you have.  Sometimes though, they will just produce wacky looking leaves for no apparent reason.  It's only when this becomes all they produce that it may be an issue.  Also, this time of year, Sarracenia flava shouldn't be making pitchers anymore at all, just phyllodia.  Phyllodia are non-carnivorous leaves that are flat.  The leaf in the photo looks like it may be a hybrid of a phyllodia and a pitcher which happens sometimes.  Daina's Delight on the other hand should be producing the best leaves of the season.

Good Growing!
