growing moss

Question
my yard has a mixture of trees and is in the shade most of the day. i want to grow moss under the trees. the soil is clay and some moss is there. would a layer 1" or so of old fir sawdust help keep the moisture in and promote more moss growth?
thanks geo

Answer
Hi There!

You don't need sawdust.
Just make sure that the soil is well packed.
You can do it by using one of those metal asphalt tampers.
(Home Depot usually carries them)
Moss will grow very well on clay soil. If you keep the humidity high you could see moss growing in no time.
Try to collect different types of moss and plant it on the area.
A mixture of bone meal and seaweed emulsion scattered over the area will also help.
Good Luck!
