Growing carrots

Question
Best Colleen,
When I pulled the carrots that I have been growing for the past 3 months, only disappointment greeted me.
They were fat at the tops, barely 3 inches long and completely covered in fine root hairs. Almost all of them were misshapen too. What could have gone wrong ?

Answer
Hi Werner,

The problem you are describing sounds like a soil issue. If soils are very compacted or heavy, or contain rocks and other debris, you will see poor growth and misshapen roots. Another issue could be inadequate watering. Carrots need a steady supply of water to form healthy roots, and thrive with regular, deep waterings.

Next time you plant, try loosening the soil to a depth of at least eight inches, and, if possible, mix in organic matter to loosen the soil. Compost or composted manure are both good options. You could also mix in chopped leaves or grass clippings. Water your carrots when the top inch of soil is dry to the touch, and water deeply.

Good luck!
