Anaheim/Jalapeno Peppers

Question
My peppers are beautiful to look at but are bitter tasting and have no heat.  There are very few seeds in the Anaheim's and the seeds in the Jalapeno's are a very pale green (almost white).  I have grown both before with excellent results.  What could be the problem?

Answer
Judy, normally this is a result of excessive rain, which depletes the soil of the nutrients necessary for good growth and taste.  It also can be attributed to other factors including cool temperatures and poor soil.

If rain is not the problem, I would recommend doing a soil test.  You can purchase a test kit at any garden center.  The ph level should be near 7.0, and the nutrient levels should read above normal.  If not, add as much organic material as possible to your soil.  These would include peat moss, aged manure, compost, shredded leaves, and humus. Organic matter improves the tilth of the soil, wards off disease and pests, and raises the fertility of the soil.

I hope this answered your question.  Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
