soil nutrition for specific plants

Question
Hi,
First of all I appriciate you volunteering your time to read my question!
Ok here's my question...
I just ripped out a cedar hedge and I planted some irises and lillies in the place where I took the hedge out.  Is the soil where I took the hedge out compatible for the new plants or do I have to add something to the soil?

Answer
Hi Robin, It may need a little work but you should be able to grow whatever you like.  Lilies like a richer, more friable soil than irises, so you'll need to amend your soil differently for the type plant you want.
Check your pH.  For most perennials it needs to be about 6-6.5.  Your local garden center can probably test it for you for free.
Loosening the soil is the most important thing you can do.  You don't need to go deep, go wide and plant your perennials slightly high to improve drainage.  Jim
