acid soil what to plant

Question
I have a black walnut tree and need some advice on what is best to plant under and around it.  I know the soil is acidic and then there is the walnut falling factor in the fall. Help  Thank You

Answer
Hi Nancy, it's not the acidity, it's a toxin called juglone that is produced by the tree.  The toxin is in fallen leaves and stems, it's exuded from roots and is toxic to most plants and inhibits Mycorrhizal fungi needed by plants for food uptake.
Fescue and Kentucky bluegrass are tolerant but will suffer if the soil is too dry.
Some tolerant shrubs are:
(Some species of) Daphne, elderberry, forsythia, hydrangea, lilac, witchazel and viburnums.  Jim
