H20 to replace potting soil

Question
Hi James,
I was wondering, is it ok to have house plants growing in vases, the roots sumerged in water instead of using potting soil? If yes, how would I feed these plants? Which kinds of plants would be best for this type of growing? I appreciate you taking the time to answer.   Thank you, Donna

Answer
Hi Donna, Most house plants will not survive long term in water. But a few plants like philodendrons and "variegated pothos" (a trade name) will survive in just water. Once a month, put two drops of Schultz liquid plant food per quart container and you can grow runners 20' long or more.  The leaves don't get as large as they do when planted on soil but they can be pruned and make a nice plant.
The plant sold as "lucky bamboo", a Dracaena, will grow in water, but long term, soil is better.  Jim
