Raising sole level in horse corral

Question
I have a horse corral that is approximately 300 ft x 35 ft. Where the horses cover is (an area about 30 x 35 ft) the elevation is  about 1 foot to low. I need to bring in a soil that will compact well and is good for the horses. What kind of soil and how much do I need to bring in? How much is a truck load? I would like to use the best material but have a limit to how much I can spend.

Answer
Hi Carl, You'll need to check your local suppliers for cost.  I'd use clay.  I'd want to apply it about 4" deep and then run a power compactor over the area and repeat the process until you achieve the desired depth.  39 yards of loose clay will cover the 30' x 35' area 1' deep, but once compacted, I suspect you'll need an additional 10 yards or so.  Jim
