all vegetable plants dying

Question
For the first time in 12 years, our entire vegetable garden is not growing.  The plants (squash, cucumbers, and eggplant)are withered and produces tiny vegetables, if any.  We water regularly and use miracle grow to fertilize.  What can we do to get our garden growing?

Answer
Hi Gigi,  First, have you soil pH tested, it should be near 6.5. Next, watering (over and under) can give you the same results.  If the plants are "yellowed", I'd suspect the soil moisture is too high. Excessive water makes iron and calcium unavailable to plants. If the leaves are green with brown tips and margins, I suspect underwatering.  Water thoroughly, deeply, but infrequently.  If watered properly, you should not have to water more than once every 4-5 days.
Next, get a better fertilizer.  Go to your local garden center and pick up a bag of a slow release fertilizer.  Milorganite or any of the Espoma "tone" products work well.
If the garden looks bad, adjust your pH as needed and then till the whole thing under and start fresh.  Stunted plants seldom recover to make a good crop.  Jim
