Rhubarb plant

Question
I know this isn't a soil question but you have been so helpful in the past. My 6 month old  rhubarb just started wilting, leaves curling and stalks hanging limp. It gets plenty of water and only get's afternoon sun. I'm thinking it is a winter plant and cannot tolerate the high temperatures here in southern Cal. We have had temps in the high 90's and 100s'. Thanks..Hope your vacation was great...

Answer
Hi Steve, Thank you, I had a great vacation.  Stayed a week on the Gulf Coast celebrating my 35th anniversary.
The heat is indeed the problem.  Rhubarb doesn't like the hot daytime temps or the warm ground temps.  But since it is a perennial, you may be able to nurse it through the heat.  Remove some of the oldest foliage to reduce the water demands of the plant.  On the hottest days, drop a brown paper sack over it during the day.  Keep it moist and it should start to recover when the weather cools down a bit. Jim
