Yarrow

Question
Would like to grow yarrow at my seaside cottage in Maine this summer.  Where can I obtain seeds and how and when do I get started?  Thanks

Answer
Hi Ed,
Thanx for your question. Yarrow is known botannically as achillea.  The seed should be easy to locate at your local garden centers.  If not try parkseed.com or thompson&morgan.com.  Adult plants are also available from local nurseries after the last frost.  If you start from seed, surface sow on moist but not soggy potting soil.  Place the growing container inside a plastic baggie and seal.  Keep in a warm room about 70 degree in a sunny window (you can't put the container in the window after March because the sun will be too intense by then and cook the container).  Germination occurs in 15-20 days.  Unseal the baggie, keep the soil moist and transplant the seedlings after they have their first set of true leaves.  Transplant to separate pots and put outdoors in a safe place where they will not be exposed to direct sunlight, wind, rain or freeze (wait til last frost).  Do this for 10 days then set out in full sun (they require full sun.  Adult plants should be readily available though and I would recommend them if you don't want to go the seed route.  I hope this helps.
Tom
