PLANT NAME

Question
HOPEFULLY, YOU CAN ANSWER THIS... THERE IS A PLANT -  A SHRUB OR BUSH I BELIEVE, WHOSE ROOT SYSTEM CONTINUES TO GROW FOR APPROXIMATELY 4 YEARS, BEFORE FINALLY 'BLOOMING', AT WHICH TIME IT CAN GROW UP TO 5-8' IN ONE YEAR.  I BELIEVE THIS PLANT IS IN THE BAMBOO FAMILY, BUT I COULD BE WRONG.  I JUST NEED THE LAYMAN'S NAME FOR THE PLANT, IF YOU KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT...!  THANKS MUCH!!  JEN

Answer
Hi Jen,
Thanx for your question.  I'm sorry but you didn't provide me with enough information.  What does the plant look like?  Is it tropical or does it grow in places where it gets cold?  Bamboo will often act the way you describe in cooler climates.  There is also a grass (actually like sugar cane) that is native to the Southern U.S. but will grow up to 12 feet in cooler parts of the country.  It is called Giant Cane.  Does the plant have plumes at the top, fluffy and golden or white at the end of the summer?  Let me know.
thx,
Tom
